Privacy Policy
Effective October 11, 2026
This policy explains how The Dayton Enquirer handles information when you visit thedaytonenquirer.com and how we use connected social media accounts to publish our own stories. You can read the site without creating an account, paying, or giving us your name or email address. We do not maintain a database of visitor profiles or saved visitor locations. We currently run no advertisements or paywalled articles, and we do not sell visitor information.
Website requests and hosting
Like other websites, ours and its in-house APIs receive technical information needed to deliver and protect the service. This can include your IP address, requested page or API URL, browser and device details, and the time of a request. Service providers delivering the site and its APIs, including Cloudflare, may process this information for delivery, security, and diagnostics. See Cloudflare's privacy policy. We do not use these requests to build visitor profiles.
Local weather and location
The weather page may ask your browser for location permission. If you allow it, the site sends latitude and longitude rounded to four decimal places to our in-house weather service, hosted on Cloudflare, to return a local forecast. If you have already granted permission, the weather indicator elsewhere on the site may use your location for the same purpose. You can instead choose a listed city or search by city, state, or ZIP code without allowing location access.
Our weather service uses the requested location to obtain forecast data from the National Weather Service. It caches forecast results by location at Cloudflare's edge for about five minutes, without adding a visitor identifier to the cache key. It does not add your coordinates or searches to our weather database. For dynamic searches, it uses the requesting IP address for short-term rate limiting. We do not use your weather location for advertising.
A city, ZIP code, or other manually selected location may appear in the weather page URL and be visible in browser history, shared links, or analytics page URLs. Coordinates obtained through the browser's location permission are not put into the page URL by our site code.
Analytics, cookies, and browser storage
We use Google Analytics to understand visits and improve the site. It can receive page URLs, interactions, approximate location, referring sites, browser, and device information, and it uses cookies or similar identifiers to distinguish visits. Analytics data is processed by Google under its privacy policy and retained according to our Google Analytics settings. We do not use Analytics for advertising on this site.
Our own browser storage remembers your light or dark theme, whether the weather page has already prompted for location, and whether you chose to use your location for weather. These preferences stay in your browser until you clear that storage. Your browser also manages the location permission; we do not save that permission in a visitor database.
Other services and social media
Some article images are served by external image hosts, which may receive ordinary request information when your browser loads an image. Business pages may load a TradingView market widget. TradingView says its widget receives the embedding page URL, widget and symbol information, and IP address to provide the widget; see its widget privacy explanation.
Our X, Facebook, Instagram, and Threads icons are links to our accounts. Clicking one takes you to that platform, where its own privacy policy applies. We also use connected accounts and publishing tools to post our articles and link comments to those accounts. That process uses our account credentials, account or Page identifiers, content, and post identifiers needed for publishing. The website does not offer social login to visitors, and our publishing tool does not collect website visitors' social account data.
Your choices and requests
- You can deny or revoke location permission in your browser and still use city or ZIP weather searches.
- You can clear browser storage and manage cookies using your browser settings. Google's Analytics opt-out add-on is another option where supported.
- You can contact us to ask about information we control, or to request access or deletion where applicable. Because the site has no visitor accounts or saved visitor locations, there may be no account or location record for us to delete. Anyone who believes our social publishing integration holds Meta platform data about them can use the contact address below to request its deletion. We will review the request and delete data we control, subject to any applicable legal retention requirement.
Email privacy questions and requests to [email protected]. We may need to request information from you to understand and verify a request. Rights and response requirements depend on where you live.
Children and changes
This general-audience news site is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly request personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided information to us, contact us at the address above.
We will update this page and its effective date when our practices materially change, including if we introduce advertising, accounts, or a paywall.
